Sarah Lum is a skilled trial and appellate attorney who became of counsel to our office in 2013 after over 20 years as an attorney for the United States Department of Justice. As an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of New York, she dealt with a full spectrum of civil litigation, as well as criminal cases involving asset forfeiture. She possesses considerable international experience, having served over six years as a Resident Legal Advisor with the United States Department of Justice's Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development.
While at the United States Attorney's Office, Ms. Lum held the position of Deputy Chief of the Asset Forfeiture Unit for several years, overseeing and coordinating all civil and criminal forfeiture litigation in the Eastern District of New York. In her international work, Ms. Lum designed and managed many continuing legal education courses and professional skills training programs for prosecutors, judges and defense attorneys in Uzbekistan, Kosovo and Moldova. She also advised on drafting laws and developing institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the rule of law and observance of due process and human rights for criminal defendants.
Ms. Lum received a B.A. from Yale University and a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law, where she was editor-in-chief of the Fordham Law Review. Following law school, she clerked for the Honorable Inzer Wyatt in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and the Staff Attorney's Office at United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. As a federal prosecutor, she received the Department of Justice's John Marshall Award for Asset Forfeiture and the New York City Bar Association's Henry L. Stimson Medal. In Moldova, her significant contributions were recognized with awards presented by Moldova's Prosecutor General and the United States Ambassador to Moldova.
